Diving in Búzios

An incredible underwater fauna, in crystal-clear water, make Búzios a "live aquarium". Underwater, the temperature is around 22ºC which is an invitation for beginners and veterans alike.

Tourist observing the bottom of the ocean at João Fernandes Beach.

At the beach line, the rocky shores of João Fernandes, João Fernandinho, Lagoinha, Forno, Azeda and Azedinha beaches are the best places to go snorkeling. At João Fernandes masks and snorkels can be rented.

As to scuba diving, one of the best places is the Âncora Island, some 6 miles from the coast (about half an hour by boat), where the average visibility of 12 meters can reach up to 25 meters in summer. Other places are the Gravatás, Filhote and Feia Islands. The Âncora (Anchor) Island, which got it's name because of it's shape, offers shelter from the winds and currents. There isn't an ideal season for diving. In May, when the winds are stronger, the visibility may be affected. The wind direction is also important, because, if it blows head on the beach, the visibility gets bad. But the other climatic conditions don't interfere much with the activity. You can go out by boat, even on a rainy day, to the islands and the water can be extremely clear. Since the islands are oceanic, they don't suffer influence from bad weather. Another positive point is the weather in Búzios, which gets in average over 250 sunny days and starry nights every year.

The Búzios' coastline is rich in sea life, part of it due to the resurfacing phenomenon, which is an oceanic current coming from Antarctica and brings rich nutrients that attract big fish like the grouper, spotted jew fish and giant manta-rays. Corals, anchovies, barracudas and even green turtles can be seen.

Another popular diving site is the nearby city Arraial do Cabo (about a 30 minute car trip from Búzios), known as one of the best diving places in Brazil.

Never dived? How about being "baptized" in Buzios?

Bottle refilling station, with electronic CO monitoring by Casamar Operator. The operator is licensed by P.D.I.C. - Professional Diving Instructors Corporation.

The underwater baptism is for those who never took any diving lessons. The Diving Baptism is a 15 minute theory class, on the vessel or on the beach, followed by scuba instruction on board. The diving will take about 30 to 40 minutes, with the instructor in contact with the pupil at all times, guiding him under the water, making sure that he can enjoy it, backed by with professionalism and safety. Waterproof cameras can be rented.

How to dive/Who to look for

Local diving operators offer baptisms, beginner or advanced courses, and daily rides on specialized boats, fitted with all the safety requirements, to the best diving spots in Búzios or Arraial do Cabo, and also rent or sell general equipment.
